1975…..The significance of this year in film history is the launching point of a new box office phenomenon….The summer blockbuster.

In the summer of 1975, a little known director by the name of Steven Spielberg took the director’s chair for a project that would eventually become the first of many in a long line of summer blockbusters. This would be a film that changed the industry forever.

Fast forward 45 years and the summer blockbuster has gone strong. Many tentpole and large budget films have taken up residency in the summer palate.

That is until the year 2020. A new global virus has rocked the industry. Production companies forced to push back shoots and film releases.

Reports state that the coronavirus forced more than half of shoots and productions to be halted or shut down.

Many of Hollywood’s most anticipated movies, such as “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson, “The Matrix 4,” starring Keanu Reeves and “Mission Impossible 7,” starring Tom Cruise, have all experienced film delays due to the coronavirus, pushing release dates into 2021.

With large releases such as Marvel’s Black Widow, Warner Bros Wonder Woman or Paramount Pictures Top Gun: Maverick being either delayed until the later months of 2020 or into 2021, no summer blockbuster was released in 2020.

And so, it has truly been the summer without.
