In the midst of the ongoing pandemic, the average person continues to hear the term “essential worker”. But what does it really mean to be essential?

During these trying times, families struggle to provide. Children find alternative ways to get educated. Many wonder what will happen next. What will the future be like after Covid-19?

With so many trying to find their place and find their way through this unprecedented year, governments decide on what is essential.

Healthcare, Law Enforcement, Food Processing, Fire and Safety…..This is what we think of when we think essential. Positions to benefit and maintain.

So when you think of essential, do you think of Hollywood?

The center of entertainment in the United States, whose reach extends across the globe. Many enamored with its grand spectacle and storytelling. For many, escape from the harsh realities of the world and the difficult times we live in.

But when it comes to this new global pandemic, is the industry essential?

As we look at 2020 and how Hollywood has changed, projects still continue on despite new and rising case numbers. Sets and productions shut down due to new positive tests. But within days, the production is back on. While the average person remains out of work for two weeks until symptoms subside and a negative test result is awaited, Hollywood productions are up and running in less time, i.e. The Batman. Its main star contracts Covid-19. Less than a week later, film begins again.

Should Hollywood be deemed more essential than the average person? Should actors/actresses take priorities over the working family? Governor Newsome of California believes so. Hollywood production companies and studios believe so.

This is a question that won’t soon be answered. It is a reality that is currently lived in. But the question will still stand. Is Hollywood truly essential during these trying times, where families struggle to provide? Or is it just deemed as such so someone can make their millions?
